Christian Counseling in San Diego
You’ve been quietly struggling for months hoping that things would get better on their own, only to realize that you need help from someone outside yourself. The reason you’ve waited for so long is because, as a Christian, you’ve been shamed into believing that if you would only “pray and read your Bible” everything would be fine. You’ve done that. It’s not fine. Now what? Is it you? Are you a bad Christian? Have you lost your faith in God?
These are the questions that swirl in your head. Meanwhile you know that that’s not the truth about who you are. You have a deep, abiding faith in God, but something else is amiss. You just don’t know how to solve the problem on your own.
I’m here to let you know that you’re not a bad Christian and you’re not doing anything wrong if you’ve been struggling with your mental health. I’m so glad you’re here.
San Diego Christian Therapist
Christy Garcia, Christian Therapist in San Diego
Hi, I’m Christy
I’m passionate about breaking down the stigma and shame that my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ often face in their everyday faith regarding their mental health. I want to empower Christians to develop emotionally healthy spirituality and break the cycles of toxic faith culture that has left them feeling wounded and alone.
Suffering is a normal part of the human experience! Jesus knew this all too well. For far too long, Christians (and many people of other faith backgrounds) have been shamed into believing that they’re somehow bad or wrong for feeling anxious or depressed or struggling to overcome a traumatic experience in their life.
I specialize in trauma therapy and am trained in EMDR. I also enjoy assisting individuals in learning how to overcome their anxiety, depression and grief & loss issues.
My goal is to assist you in gaining healing, transformation, and restoration in your life. Additionally, I am able to integrate a faith-based perspective into the therapeutic process and will do so in a way that honors your faith journey and relationship with God.
My approach to therapy is person-centered. Together we’ll focus on what brought you into therapy and identify what your goals are. My next step is helping you understand why you’re struggling. Lastly, we’ll work on what you can do to overcome your challenges. I like to empower my clients with a range of coping skills you can have in your “tool belt” that are readily available whenever you need them so you can be confident that you’re able to start feeling better and finally experience wholeness in your life!

FAQs about
Christian Counseling

Yes, Christians can absolutely have mental health issues. Being a person of faith does not make anyone immune to the challenges of mental health. Just as Christians can experience physical illness, they can also face mental and emotional struggles such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or stress. It's important to remember that mental health issues are not a reflection of a person's faith or spiritual weakness; they are a part of the human experience. Seeking help through therapy, medication, or other resources is a responsible and often necessary step in caring for the mind and spirit, much like seeing a doctor for physical ailments. Christian therapists can provide support that acknowledges both the psychological and spiritual aspects of mental health, helping individuals find healing and peace while integrating their faith into the process.

Absolutely, it is okay—and often very beneficial—for Christians to go to therapy. Seeking therapy does not indicate a lack of faith; rather, it is a proactive step toward holistic well-being. God has gifted professionals with the skills and knowledge to help people navigate life's challenges, including mental and emotional struggles. Therapy can complement one's spiritual journey by addressing underlying issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship difficulties that may hinder spiritual growth. Many Christian therapists integrate faith into their practice, providing a safe space where clients can explore their concerns through both psychological and spiritual lenses. Ultimately, therapy can be a powerful tool for healing and personal development, aligned with the Christian belief in caring for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.

The difference between a Christian Counselor and a Christian Therapist lies primarily in their training and approach. A Christian Counselor typically integrates biblical teachings and spiritual guidance into their counseling sessions, focusing on aligning their advice with Christian values and helping clients grow in their faith. They may or may not have formal training in psychology or therapy but often rely on their understanding of scripture and pastoral experience. On the other hand, a Christian Therapist is a licensed mental health professional who combines evidence-based therapeutic techniques with a Christian worldview. They have undergone rigorous academic and clinical training in psychology, counseling, or social work, enabling them to address a wide range of psychological issues while also incorporating spiritual perspectives when appropriate. This dual expertise allows Christian Therapists to offer both clinical interventions and spiritual support, providing a comprehensive approach to mental and emotional well-being.

Absolutely, you can still attend Christian counseling even if you are questioning your faith. A professional licensed Christian therapist is ethically bound to respect your beliefs and values, no matter where you are on your spiritual journey. Their role is not to impose their personal convictions on you, but rather to meet you exactly where you are and provide support that aligns with your needs. Whether you are firm in your faith, exploring doubts, or somewhere in between, a Christian therapist will create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can openly discuss your thoughts and feelings. The focus will be on helping you navigate your concerns with compassion and understanding, allowing you to explore your faith—or any other issues—at your own pace.
